Every company has a history. Some of it is official and others are anecdotal stories that continually come up and often evoke emotions. What does your company folklore say about your company?
For example, how may different stories do you think you would get if you ask five different people how your workplace was started? If tales of the past, Folklore, explain the present doesn’t the way of the present pave way for the future?
The Beginning
The Decompression Chamber is right this way
Some laws are written in black and white. There are also agreements that remain unwritten. One could argue following these codes will get you much further.
While “corporate code” is unique to each company, rest assured every company has a code by which the employees go about their work and interact with their peers, vendors, and customers. In some cases this code is well thought out and in others it has just developed over time. What are your company codes and are they positively or negatively impacting your work environment and your bottom line?
When is the best time to get yelled at for stuff relating to ID Badges?
Not all of us get to take “the helicopter” to work. In our office, cars are the preferred choice. Badge Express is “conveniently located” right off I-95 (which is good, really) just a few miles north of busy downtown Fort Lauderdale. There are certain cities that have a reputation for bad driving and lengthy traffic jams. Most of us would think New York or Los Angeles – while Fort Lauderdale may not even enter your mind. However, we’ve topped the list @ numero uno for bad driving according to CNBC.com.
Before I let you in on who’s doing all the yelling and getting so riled over id badges…
Think about this…You wake up earlier in the morning than you would if you were on a dream vacation in some exotic part of the wold most of us workers can only dream of as we look at pictures in the office — only to head off to work. You work because you have bills to pay, mouths to feed, cars to maintain, family members to bail out and to hopefully some day — to be happily retired with the wonderful opportunity to live every day to the fullest for you, doing what you’ve always wanted to do — whatever than may
be.
Did you know, it’s not uncommon for prisoners to daydream or fantasize about “life on the outside” — even when they still have multiple years still to serve? They’re not alone! Based on conversations I’ve had with those of us in and out of this office, fantasizing about “another life” is no less common “here on the outside.”
Life can be hard, but we all do what we can to make it the best we know how:
After the alarm clock violently severs you from your dreams and you’re forced out of your bed to face the cold realities of daily life, starting with everything you have to face right in your own home — the last thing most of us fantasize about it making it out the front door, being subjected to a jaw clenching, gut wrenching morning hazing as you drive to work only to be greeted with a merciless bevy of insult laden belittling foul breathed hot air from those that love you the most — you kinful trusted co-workers. While that type of thing may happen at other offices, part of the code of Badge Express is the idea of a decompression chamber.
If you can imagine this:
As you enter the office senses still hurting from the nerve grating journey — you are uplifted instantly. The new feeling would be best described as if you entered a gentle cavernous womb any self-respecting mother would envy. The stress from your drive and the rest of life melts away as you are greeted with a chair comfortable beyond imagination that warmly embraces you as a team of expert massage therapists and aroma therapists create a desirable and addictive opium den like feeling, rendering everything you went through to get there seem as if it were the smallest of small tariffs. As you are wheeled into your own luxury suite complete with a bar, staff that gets all the work done on time — without ever upsetting any customers or making mistakes — every, you know it’s ok to relax a little. You’re at home — work is now the ultimate utopia. There is nowhere else that you would even bother to imagine being as it couldn’t even come close to the utopia you get to put yourself Monday – Friday 9-5.
No, that’s not what actually happens in our office, but:
One of the unspoken codes we all honor in Badge Express is to at least give each other the time, space and freedom to decompress a bit before bringing up anything work related in the mornings — good, bad or ugly. We all know what it takes to make it in to work in the morning. We all have lives, bills, troubles, challenges and all of the stuff that just about every one else in the world is faced with. We know that sometimes life is perfect, giving you roses in the morning and chocolate at night before bed – and other times it’s…well, not so nice. But all the time, we honor what you’ve been through to get to where you are and we embrace the secret “Decompression Chamber” code in our office.
How is this even possible?
Logos, Mascots, Jingles, Sayings, Dress Codes, Pride in Ownership, Products, Posters and Sayings in the Office, Signs in the Bathroom, Pictures on the Wall, What’s allowed and what’s taboo, How the phones are answered, Policies, Kinship…
Some are obvious, others subtle — all can be thought about as SYMBOLS which tell a detailed story. What story do the symbols we’re sharing in our office communicate to you?
There are those who wonder:
The top of our Main Website has an inscription we are sometimes ask about — “At the Lowest Prices, Guaranteed” There is an explanation as to why we can offer HID Id Cards and have such a slogan. It can be traced to our past…
Security One
The Insiders at Badge Express all come from a company called Security One. There are many things that happened there — which is where much of our current folklore is rooted. As spoken by George:

What a great time it was:
1995 – 2005. For those of us in the center of Badge Express we know those years well. Those were times filled with tremendous memories for all. We feel the blood, sweat and tears that took a company called Security One from inception in 1995 to sale in 2005 gave us everything we have today. One of the reasons a less than 10 year old Id Badge Company is able to make the truthful statement of over 10,000,000 Id Badges Sold is because of the “expert product knowledge” we picked up in the Security One years.
What makes us Valuable:
One of the reasons many of our customers value Badge Express so much is because of our background. We know security inside and out. When Security One sold in 2005, a core group of longtime friends and family decided to stick together and enjoy a workplace where we could have fun, do what we love and thrive.
The picture you see above reminds us
Security One is where we came from. If you know us, chances are it has come up in conversation as a reference point. At Badge Express today, Security One is one of our most valuable symbols. It means more than meets the eye.

Have a cigar…For Us, it’s part of the Id Badges business:
Cigars are many things to different people. To some – they are foreign, dirty and to be avoided. To others they are just as much as lifestyle as being a appreciative connoisseur of fine wines. To us, cigars are a way of bonding in the office. As in any business (that we know of) the world of Id Badges has it’s stressors. An open (and rather liberal) policy about cigars in our place of business helps the stress of being in a competitive market go up in smoke.
We approach Id Badges, as a business with the mindset of abundance:
In the current world climate, fear has crept into many businesses. We have all witnessed our fair share of comrades “closing shop” in tough times. Bonding over cigars is symbolic for everyone in our office that it’s still an ideal time to have pride and belief in our Id Badges company and this Country as well.
Badge Express – Id Badges “Guaranteed Lowest Price”
Inauguration
What some consider habit, others consider Ritual. It’s a way of thinking. We think Rituals provide an opportunity to open up, share and go beyond the obvious reasons we’re here…
How do your phones get answered? What types of things do people look forward to in the office? Do you all eat lunch together? Have certain celebrations? What are the rituals that define your work environment?
What is one way to bond that just about every culture embraces? I don’t know about you, but one of the first things that comes to mind on this end is food. Just one lunch can provide all that’s needed to break down barriers and allow everyone to feel as though we’re on the same page. That’s why Thai Tuesdays is such an important ritual for us @ Badge Express…

Some are obvious, others subtle — all can be thought about as SYMBOLS which tell a detailed story. What story do the symbols we’re sharing in our office communicate to you?
What you don’t bring up on a first date
Some laws are written in black and white. There are also agreements that remain unwritten. One could argue following these codes will get you much further.
While “corporate code” is unique to each company, rest assured every company has a code by which the employees go about their work and interact with their peers, vendors, and customers. In some cases this code is well thought out and in others it has just developed over time. What are your company codes and are they positively or negatively impacting your work environment and your bottom line?
There’s a specific CODE that goes with a company that sells Security ID Badges, it may be closer to home than you know:
So you know a thing or two about rivalry…
What do you associate with the concept of RIVALRY? Chances are you can recall at
least one time you experienced a stark contrast in viewpoints with someone close to you, resulting in heated friction. Maybe you can recall at least one time in your life one of these clashes in opinions would have an outsider to thinking of it more along the lines of a “passionate bout of bitter hostility” than a common way of “sorting things out” – while an insider quickly understand it as code of conduct. We’re in the business of selling Security Id Badges, and you bet we have a strict code in our office that may be more closely related to your office than you might think…
The Code in our office — beyond Selling Security ID Badges:
Rule Number One: You’ve gotta have thick skin. No, this isn’t in our company policy, employee handbook or anything like that. If you want to survive in this Security ID Badges office, then you’ll quickly learn — it’s one of those “secret” codes. Not only that, it’s one we take very seriously. For example, when we were welcoming Shannon to our team, we knew she had a great set of skills to join us from a “Can you do your job” perspective…But we wondered…Could she hang with us in the office?
What don’t you do on a First Date?
I know, that can be taken many different ways, and most of them have little, to nothing to do with Security Id Badges. In fact, on a first date (if that part of your life ended loong ago, reminisce…), chances are, one of the last things to flash through your mind is Security Id Badges — but there are a few taboo subjects that some consider impolite to discuss on a first date. Of course, these taboo subjects might be impolite to discuss in a Security ID Badges (or any other regular office) as well – but that’s certainly not the case here. And no, it’s not sex, because everyone (we know) talks about that anyways, on first dates and offices alike.
In case you’re still wondering:
Religion and Politics are two topics people often get animated, heated and disorientated about. We’re no different. What do you think is the best case scenario when an Atheist, Christian and Jew (all with strong opinions) decide to turn on the news while having lunch and share our thoughts about a world solution with each other? Now you understand why our chief concern when welcoming Shannon to the team was not how well she knew security id badges, but does she have thick skin?
To an outsider:
Our inner office way of being, or code might seem a “bit rough” and disagreeable at times. The reality is, we’re closer than many families. Granted, making friends isn’t the driving force of the common career path, but here, in this office, kinship holds us together. Truth be told, sometimes (often) we enjoy a great debate for no other reason than sport. To the unfamiliar eye, our world may seem chaotic. To us, it’s simply part of our code.
Our Company, Badge Express, is here to Sell Security Id Badges — while our “Secret Sauce” allows us to offer stuff like “Lowest Price Guaranteed” — but none of that means anything if we’re not having fun:
In the end, we’re a family. We find a way to accept each others differences so we can come together and have each others backs when the heat get’s turned up. Even though it might be hard to believe after witnessing a heated lunch debate or company meeting — but when it comes down to the wire, if you’ve got thick skin, don’t take the ruff n’ tumble talk in our office seriously and do what you’re supposed to do, we’ve got your back through thick and thin. It’s all simply part of the set of unwritten rules we think of as code. Every office has one, what’s your?
